Thanks Martin. It wasn't completely obvious that the scale charges were VAT inclusive so I am pleased you pointed it out and I have amended the text to make this point more clearly - hopefully!

Hi Ray,

You are aware that you only pay the VAT element of the scale charge? Therefore, assuming 3 years (at a 15% VAT rate for ease) the VAT due per quarter on a top band car is £57.52 (£441 x 3/23) - after 3 years you would have underpaid £690!!

Hi Ray,

So sorry to hear about your Mum. Our sincere condolences go to you and yours.

I was very moved reading your article and realised that it is the same for all of us who've lost a loved one – only once you’ve experienced a loss can you truly appreciate a little of what others are going thorough.

And yes, who’s not guilty of just getting on with life… meaning to… existing… Sadly it takes something like a bereavement to make us realise we’re not immortal and should make every second count.

Thinking of you and your family at this sad time. Take special care of each other.

Hi Ray

Sorry for hearing about your recent loss and losing your son Simon.

It's hard for me to imagine what that must be like and it's what every parent dreads I suppose.

Thanks for sharing and giving us a wake up call.

I agree I am looking through rose tinted glasses at the moment, but after 15 years or so with Barclays, after being subjected to endless charges, needless hassles and having the account moved around the country at the bank's whim - an arguement about just 1 charge would have been a dream for me and no excuse to change the account - But, as it is...!

Banks are like mobile service providers... pretty much necessary but have to be lucky for it to go smoothly.

More than 2 years on with HSBC and also have had mostly good experiences, just one small issue maybe a year ago and sorted out with a call to the right person.

Unfortunately now we have spent nearly 3 months experiencing incredibly poor and frustrating service from HSBC regarding a bank charge which is obvious to us, an error.

HSBC has been unable to provide adequate details of the charge, apart from saying it's not their charge. They also haven't been responding when they say they will, and when they do it's with answers to a question that was never asked.

Do I think this shows HSBC to provide a poor service?

No worse than what we'd probably see anywhere else.

Would we change banks?

Something to consider but I wouldn't expect a much better service elsewhere once they've had time to make mistakes.
