By-Election Will Put North West Leics On The Map!

By-Election Will Put North West Leics On The Map!

I read with regret that our local MP David Taylor sadly died on boxing day whilst out walking with his family at Calke Abbey. Although David was a labour MP he worked hard for his constituents and was well known locally for challenging the party leadership when he didn’t like or agree with their policies.

Wishing You All A Merry Christmas!!

I just have time, as I wind down for the holiday, to think back over the past year and of the changes implemented, new client’s met, tax investigations handled, and how everyone has met the worst recession in living memory with humour and determination.

Many familiar, large, businesses have left our lives this year, most notably for us was the loss of Borders at Fosse Park, Leicester, which finally closed at 9pm on the 22nd December. It was

You Can Now Pay Your Self Assessment Tax By Budget Plan

You Can Now Pay Your Self Assessment Tax By Budget Plan

17 December 2009 | By | Add a Comment

The government have introduced a budget plan to help people to pay their self assessment taxes over a period of time by direct debit. The plan only applies to those people whose tax affairs (and payments) are right up to date though. If you are one of those lucky people, you probably don’t need the opportunity to pay by instalments via direct debit, but you can also use the scheme to arrange your payment due on the 31st January 2010 to be paid in full by direct debit as well.

If you are behind with your tax payments…

Tax Free Perks You Can Give Your Employees

Tax Free Perks You Can Give Your Employees

I was recently asked by the owner of a fair sized business if there were still any perks he could give his employees that didn’t attract tax and national insurance. The answer, even in these days of high tax, is yes – unbelievably!

I started to list a few things down and realized this would make interesting reading for a fair number of employers who are sick to the back teeth of having everything they try and give their employees taxed to the point of it no longer being worthwhile doing

VAT Question From A Publican!

VAT Question From A Publican!

9 December 2009 | By | Add a Comment

I have just been asked about the VAT increase that is due to happen at 00:01 a.m. on the 1st January 2010 back to 17.5% and how it affect Pubs/Restaurants that are hosting a New Year’s Eve party. I thought it a good idea to clarify this point for everybody who may be wondering.

The rate is due to change at that moment, but for publicans/restaurants lucky enough (these days) to enjoy a busy New Year’s Eve party at their Premises,

When Will Spaceship Government Return to Planet Reality?

I apologize for this post as I do not normally write about policital issues but… I was woken up at 7am this morning by a news bulletin that the Government have announced a pledge to reduce public expenditure by £12bn over the next 4 years. Last week there was a scandal about the RBS brokers [...]

SatNav trials!

Ever since I received it I have been a staunch supporter of the Garmin Sat Nav the family bought me for my 50th birthday just over two years ago. No dead ends, no railway tracks, easy to update, reliable through France, generally excellent with no problems – until today.

My youngest son had a Rock School exam this afternoon in Darley Dale for his electric guitar.

Still Confused By New State Pension Age Rules?

Still Confused By New State Pension Age Rules?

3 December 2009 | By | 1 Comment

A number of people have asked me for clarification about the new retirement ages and how to work out exactly when their pensions may be expected to start (assuming the Country isn’t bankrupt by then – but that’s another post altogether!).

The Tax Office have acknowledged these genuine concerns and have produced a helpful calculator…
