I read with regret that our local MP David Taylor sadly died on boxing day whilst out walking with his family at Calke Abbey. Although David was a labour MP he worked hard for his constituents and was well known locally for challenging the party leadership when he didn’t like or agree with their policies.
[private_basic]David was standing down at the next election anyway and start to enjoy a well earned retirement at the age of 63. How unfair is life that it took away this simple pleasure from him.I remember David from regular chats we used to have at the “Rag & Mop” pub in Whitwick when he was a county councillor.
His untimely passing though will pose a problem for our illustrious government. They will now have to have a by-election before the general election and I am pretty sure GB will want to protect David Taylor’s 4,400 odd majority in the 2005 election, and no doubt the other parties will want to show how ready they are for a general election!
So, I predict our little constituency will see some parliamentary big hitters from all parties in the run up to the by-election – unless GB manages to delay the by-election until the “main” event.
Needless to say it will be an interesting time.
Thank you again David for all the work you did for our community. Not just the last 12 years or so in parliament but for the many years you spent prior to that as a local councillor. You were in the local paper almost every single week supporting this or helping out with that. What a star – and what a really, really hard act you are to follow.
Rest now in peace David Tayor
